Tamil New Year (Puthandu) 2026 — Traditional Foods, Rituals & Recipes

Tamil New Year (Puthandu) falls on April 14th every year — the first day of Chithirai month. It is a day of new beginnings, symbolic foods, and the famous Kani ritual. Here is how to celebrate it authentically in Europe.

The Significance of Puthandu

Tamil New Year (புத்தாண்டு) marks the beginning of the Tamil solar calendar year. Unlike the Gregorian new year, it is tied to the sun entering the Aries zodiac — celebrated on April 14th annually. The day begins with the Kani ritual: waking before sunrise to view auspicious items (gold, raw rice, fresh flowers, fruits, betel leaves, a lit lamp) as the first thing seen in the new year. Each item symbolises wealth, nourishment, and divine blessing for the year ahead.

Maangai Pachadi — The Six-Taste Dish

The most iconic Puthandu dish is Maangai Pachadi — a raw mango relish that intentionally combines all six tastes: sour (raw mango), sweet (jaggery), bitter (neem flowers), spicy (chilli), salty, and astringent. The six tastes together symbolise that the new year will bring all experiences — not just the pleasant ones. Method: Cook diced raw mango with jaggery, tamarind water, salt, and neem flowers. Temper with mustard seeds, dried chilli, and curry leaves in coconut oil. Serve at room temperature.

Puthandu Kali (Sweet Rice)

A sweet, sticky rice dish made with raw rice, jaggery, coconut, and cardamom. Similar to Sakkarai Pongal but drier in texture. Cook raw rice until soft, then mix with dissolved jaggery, freshly grated coconut, ghee, and cardamom. The sweetness symbolises prosperity for the new year. Served as prasadam (blessed food) after the morning prayer.

Vazhaipoo Vadai (Banana Flower Fritters)

Banana flower (vazhaipoo) is cleaned, finely chopped, and mixed with chana dal, onion, ginger, curry leaves, and spices to form fritters. These are deep-fried until crispy and served as a festive snack. Banana flower is rich in iron and potassium — a deeply nutritious ingredient central to Tamil festival cooking. The preparation is time-consuming but the result is exceptional.

Essential Ingredients for Puthandu Cooking

For an authentic Puthandu spread you need: raw mango (or dried raw mango powder), neem flowers (dried), jaggery (preferably palm jaggery), fresh coconut, banana flower, toor dal, urad dal, raw ponni rice, and a full range of Tamil spices. RanaGroupe ships all these across Europe with standard delivery times of 3–5 days to France, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, and the UK.
